And as someone who has been at UF for six years, at the very least I can pass on a little wisdom to all you whip- persnappers to help you get the most out of your under- graduate experience. For me, it wasn't until the end of my second year of col- lege that I discovered what I consider the icing on my deli- cious undergraduate cake - student activist organizations.

The organizations vary greatly as to their member- ships, goals, methods and successes. At UF, you will find a group for every worldview, and in what follows, I hope to offer a completely unbiased and utterly accurate descrip- tion of each to help you spread your activist wings and start changing the world for better or worse. First off, if the thought of poor people makes your- skin crawl, the Libertarian Activist Network is for you.

With it, you can get out there and make sure all those lazy whiners at the bottom of the Darwinist social ladder don't have ac- cess to things only meant for rich people, like health care and education. Even better, if you ever get bored, you can call up another member and talk about how the Ron Paul Revolution will never die.

If your ire doesn't stop at poor people but extends to immigrants, foreigners, homosexual people, Muslims and pretty much anyone who is different than you, you have a home with the College Republicans. Not only can you share yachting stories with fellow members, but you have almost an entire semester of pretending to like Sen. John McCain. Does the thought of being a Republican make you regurgitate your freedom fries? Don't worry; we've got the College Democrats too. They're always there to help spread your ideas for changing the world in the least effective and most spineless way possible.

Moving further down the politi- cal spectrum to somewhere beyond the mundane confines of orthodox Brandon Sack American political thought, we have Students for a Democratic ettersalltoror Society. With SDS, you can fight for socially responsible investing, stop- ping the war and pretty much anything else by the only method that works - pretending it's the s.

For all you aspiring nurses, dentists and physicians who might feel a little weary of all the political science and history kids, fear not. This organization wants to make sure that the drugs resulting from biomedical research at universities like UF make it to lower income areas of the world. Beats me, but it sounds more fun than volunteering for Shands at UF. All jokes aside, each of these organizations is a great way to get involved.

The Libertarians are one of the most active, vocal and thought-provoking groups I've come across. The Republicans are actually good at pretending to be fired up about McCain. And along with the Democrats, they provide some stimulating political debates. SDS has been a personal favorite of mine, raising brand new issues, such as socially responsible investing, and making consid- erable progress with them.

Last but not least, UAEM is growing like wildfire and has some of the most motivated, enthusiastic members I have seen. Any one of these groups will no doubt enhance your UF experience by providing an opportunity to try some- thing new and meet like-minded people, all while doing your part to change your world. Brandon Sack is a second-year biomedical sciences graduate student and a member of Students for a Democratic Society. The views expressed here are not necessarily those of the Alligator.

Jarrod Holland, APK UF has a shot just like any other school, but linebacker Brandon Spikes' leadership is going to be pivotal in getting the defense even dose to the offense's level. The defensive line isn't looking great, but if Javier Estopinan is healthy and Omar Hunter is as good as Urban Meyer seems to think, they might have a chance to be one of the better run-stopping teams in the SEC.

The offense should be great no matter how healthy Percy Harvin is, but his health could take them from being a great offen- sive team to one of the best offenses in the modem era. Violations of state laws against drink- ing alcohol under the age of 21, owning fake IDs and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are the most common among incoming freshman,, according to local police. University Police spokesman Capt. Two more often-violated city and school ordinances are ones that prohibit public urination and carrying open containers of alcohol on public property, he said. Violations are most frequent during the fall football season, he said.

On football weekends, University Police specifically target "unrestricted drinking atmospheres," which usually means a tail- gating party with a keg, Holcomb said. Police keep an eye on those parties be- cause hosts often don't check whether the people lining up for beer are actually 21, he said.

If underage students are found with alcohol, they will receive not only a cita- tion to appear in court, but also an order to meet with UF Student Judicial Affairs, a committee that handles violations of the school code of conduct. Chris Loschiavo, assistant dean of judi- cial affairs, said when students are found violating the code of conduct, they are asked to schedule a meeting with a judicial affairs counselor. In most cases, students choose between an informal or formal meeting, he said. Violations are usually handled infor- mally, which means students will discuss their cases with a staff member who will then determine an appropriate conse- quence.

Possible consequences include seminars on alcohol and drug use and a written rep- rimand on a student's conduct record that mentions the incident. Written reprimands can come into play when students are applying for law school -or other forms of graduate education, he said. A second offense or a serious first of- fense can prevent a student from holding office in student organizations, studying abroad or competing in sports, Loschiavo said.

Public Those punishments are in Safety addition to the possible ones a student may get from the city or state, he said. Spencer Mann, spokesman for the State Attorney's Office, said consequences for violating city or state laws or ordinances vary according to a student's criminal his- tory and the specifics of the offense. Applying for jobs, schools and licensing can all be affected by even minor offenses, he said. Mann recommended that students visit www.

Gainesville Police spokeswoman Summer Hallett said students also should remember dealing with police is much easier when all parties are respectful and honest. Though all parents react differently to their kids leaving home, there are ways for new students to keep Mom and Dad reassured. Michael Murphy, a psychologist at the UF Counseling Center, said most par- ents worry their children may not function well on their own.

They worry about whether their sons and daughters will eat right, be able to do their own laundry and stay safe. Even though some students arrive in Gainesville and immediately love being here, parents can take longer to adjust. Having their roles change after 18 years can be difficult to accept. Erin Hawkins, a music performance junior, knows about those concerns first- hand. She said her parents wanted to make sure she was comfortable and had every- thing she needed when she first came to Gainesville.

To ease their worries, Hawkins tried to keep her parents involved in her life, even bringing them to tailgating parties before games. Meeting the new people in her life made her parents feel closer to her, she said. You realize how much you miss them and how much you depended on them. Breaking away is a gradual process, he said, so students should try to be under- standing.

But while they reassure their parents that everything is fine, students can also take steps to establish new boundaries. For example, calling home less fre- quently helps show a student's need for space, he said. Murphy said communication is key, whether it's asking for more or less sup- port. This, however, doesn't mean students have to divulge every bit of information about how they are using their newfound independence.

Hawkins kept that in mind, too. She said she didn't feel the need to go into too much detail with her parents about her university experiences. But after a while, Pyfrom figured there was no point in hiding anything because she was getting older and more mature. Initially, her mother didn't like hearing about trips to night clubs, but eventually she got over it.

She cried when Pyfrom came to UF. Pyfrom said she received calls from home every day for the first few months. Pyfrom's mother stayed supportive from a distance, sending money and mak- ing doctor's appointments for her when she wasn't feeling well. She didn't visit Gainesville often, though, something.

Pyfrom appreciated as she set out to establish a life on her own. But sometimes, even though they don't like to admit it, new students can miss home, too. To cope with the transition, Hawkins made sure to stay busy. Pyfrom said she still calls her mother when she needs someone to talk to. She has created 55 photo albums, and so far there are 1, photos of her online.

She checks Facebook from her Blackberry while she's waiting in line or on the bus to pass the time. And every day, she logs in four or five times, even if she has noth- ing new to add to her profile. Facebook started as a social network for college students, and it has since become a networking tool for anyone willing to start an account.

It's become a place where poke wars can ,last for years, where friends lists can outnumber real- life friends and where the curious can discover other Facebookers' moves through the site's News Feed, a once controversial ap- plication that's now just another option in an endless sea of new applications. Lombardo, a UF public rela- tions and psychology senior, said she feels as if she has lost a lot of her privacy, although she has a private profile.

People can post as much information about them- selves as they want, but some- times issues still arise, she said. Everyone has access to so much info, and it really complicates things like relationships, friend- ships and looking for jobs," she said. But users have to take the bad with the good. And it's a great way for teacher-student and student-student communica- tion. But Albert Matheny, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as- sociate dean for student affairs, said students often post too much information on Facebook.

Matheny, who is in charge of the academic side of Preview, said freshmen should think twice be- fore posting information on their profiles. Anyone from parents to em- ployers to professors can keep tabs on the site, he said. It's not hard to do.

I think that is the big- gest thing, that they just overcool themselves. In addition to creating an on- line identity, students on Facebook can' join online groups, which bring students together who have similar interests, however silly or mundane they may seem.

The group lists the easier classes offered at UF, a great tool for freshmen on the prowl for an easy class. But for new students who missed their chance to be at UF for the titles, there are plenty of other groups to join. Tower Rd. Gainesville, FL Use financial aid. Apply for scholarships. Options include 16 Panhellenic Council sororities, 25 Interfraternity Council fraternities, nine traditionally black National Pan-Hellenic sororities and 10 Multicultural Greek Council chapters.

Maryam Laguna, president of UF's Multicultural Greek Council, said Greek organizations provide students who are- daunted by their choices of clubs with a way of finding a group of students with similar interests to their own. Craig Thompson, president of UF's Interfraternity Council, said the Greek lifestyle encourages students to take ad- vantage of their college years. The council governs 25 of UF's fraterni- ties. Thompson said networking with alumni often gives students in Greek orga- nizations an upper hand for careers after graduation.

Life Many members of fraternities and sororities are involved with prominent organizations such as Florida Blue Key, Florida Cicerones and Student Government. Jessica Layne, president of the Panhellenic Council, said the mutual selection process of Panhellenic sorority recruitment ensures that students will find the group that fits them best. During recruitment week, potential new members visit each chapter and select which ones they like, while chapter lead- ers select the students they feel would best fit in their group.

S"You'll have a close-knit group of friends that will be there for you," Layne said. In fact, according to the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Affairs Web site, these organizations are huge time commit- ments - ones that are equivalent to taking a three-credit class. Members often must complete required activities, such as risk management cours- es and weekly chapter meetings. The cost of membership can also burn a considerable hole in students' wallets.

As a student assistant for the Center for Student Activities and Involvement, Dolce said he understands the importance of get- ting involved while in college. Many are academic clubs, but there are also social, political and spiritual organi- zations. Cunningham said becoming involved with campus organizations helps students find a community away from home, which helps freshmen coping with the transition from high school to college.

Involvement depends on the specific interests of each student. Cunningham advises students to be- come involved with groups that focus on things they are passionate about. Dolce agrees. Francis House, a local homeless shelter, he said. He said his organization has paired up with Gators for Obama, another student organization, and the two groups will be coordinating their meetings. College Republicans are the official Elections representatives of the Republican Party on campus, said Bryan Griffin, the group's president. Members of the organization spread political aware- ness on campus, host forums for discussion, register people to vote and provide grassroots support for the party, Griffin said.

In the fall, the organization, which has joined forces with Gators for McCain, will be showing conservative- themed movies on the last Wednesday of every month until November and plans to host barbecues on campus, he said. Griffin said the major goal of his organization, which is linked to the local, state and national Republican cam- paign, is making sure students are educated about all candidates.

Griffin said he is uncomfortable about the number of misconceptions he sees on campus about the Republican Party. Often students see the elephant, and think big oil and old, rich white executives, he said. UF Student Government is also working to get stu- dents involved in the national campaign this year. Chomp the Vote is a non-partisan SG agency that is try- ing to get as many students as possible registered to vote, said Student Body President Kevin Reilly. Reilly said voter registration is important, but what he really wants to see is an increase of students who actually go to the polls on Election Day.

But stick around Gainesville long enough and knowing when to buy, where to buy and what to buy becomes second nature. A number of bookstores in town compete for students' dol- lars by offering an abundance of books, coupons or deferment - a buy now, pay later option.

Tom Rider, co-owner of Goerings Book Store, said he owns a mom-and-pop operation where students can always count on good service. The store carries books mainly for liberal arts and sciences ma- jors, and the selection is organized by teacher. He said because students are price-conscious, the store offers deferment and, when possible, low-priced used books.

The store sells new and used textbooks and school supplies. At the end of the semester, most bookstores will buy back books for a portion of the price paid. Roberts said there are always better times than others to bring books in for buyback. Other ways students can save at the store is by reserving books ahead of time and using Gator Greenbacks coupons, he said.

Like Roberts, Bibbee said certain times of the semester are better for making sure bookstores will buy back a textbook or give a higher price. Lynne Vaughan, director of the UF Bookstore, said the textbook business is a competitive market, but the university tries to do its best with offering fair prices. Some students choose to skip bookstores altogether. Terri Cronin, a UF nursing junior, said if her professor has provided the book to the library, she prefers to save her money and use the reserve copy.

Still, it saves money, she said. Carolina Toro, a UF elementary education junior, said she likes to make a deal with someone who has already taken the class. It's hard to miss the graffiti-ridden 34th Street Wall, a 1,foot- long concrete barrier that has been a Gainesville landmark for almost 30 years. People have used the Wall, which stretches along Southwest 34th Street near Southwest Second Avenue, to celebrate national championship wins, offer birthday wishes and pop the question. Lourdes Santamaria-Wheeler, digital production supervisor at UF's Digital Library Center, helps manage the library's online col- lection of photographs tracking the Wall's history.

Wheeler said people have been painting on the Wall since the Department of Transportation put it up in A 1 nd While space is limited and messages are fleet- EUinlnoSVll e ing, one panel paying tribute to the five victims of the Gainesville murders is a permanent fixture, thanks to students and residents who touch up the paint. MacKenzie appreciates the tradition of the Wall but said Keep Alachua County Beautiful does occasionally paint over obscenities. Santamaria-Wheeler said she considers the Wall a form of public art. UF ranks as the No. Additionally, UF ranked No. Amy Panikowski, a campus recruiter in UF's Peace Corps office, said those rankings translated to a total of 59 volunteers UF recruited for the Peace Corps this past year.

Of those, 55 were UF students. In addition to the sheer size of the school, Panikowski stressed the enthusiasm for and dedication to service that she sees in UF students as a reason for the high recruit- ment. They can send money. They can pro- test. They can do whatever here, but actually On getting over there and seeing what's going on Campus is a huge difference for them," she said. Because I rise well before dawn wherever I happen to be, I stepped outside to see what I could see from 4, feet. A fog bank was rolling silently down the side of the mountain like a curtain opening on the sleepy world, revealing 50 miles of forested hills in the light of a chilly quarter moon.

The only other lights I saw were a few remaining stars flung somewhere over East Tennessee. The only sound I heard was the wind sighing over the western flank of Beech Mountain. An owl hooted on a distant ridge, saying goodbye to summer. In a world where it is almost impossible to get lost or find genuine silence and solitude, this moment was a rare thing of beauty. I stood there for probably half an hour, savoring the chill, an over-scheduled man of Earth watching the moon vanish and a pleated sky grow lighter by degrees, drinking in the mountain air like a tonic from the gods, savoring a silence that yielded only to the awakening of nature and first stirrings of birdsong.

After an endless summer that wilted both garden and spirit down in the flatlands, a golf trip with three buddies to the highest mountain town in the eastern United States was exactly what I needed. A door opened behind me on the deck. My oldest friend, Patrick, stepped out, a cup of tea in hand, giving a faint shiver. The lovely house belonged to our friends Robert and Melanie, and though there were hundreds of houses tucked into the mountain slopes all around us, from this particular vantage point none was visible or even apparent, providing the illusion of intimacy— a world unmarked by man.

I admitted that, for a few precious moments, I felt as if I were standing on the deck of the post-and-beam house I built for my family on a hilltop of beech and birch and hemlock near the coast of Maine, our family home for two decades, surrounded by miles of protected forest. The skies, the views, even the smell of the forest were nearly identical.

Sometimes I missed that place more than I cared to admit. It felt like the top of the world. My sacred retreat for a transcendental Buddho-Episcopalian who has a keen fondness for good Methodist covered dish suppers. He knew exactly what I meant. Old friends do.

In every spiritual tradition, mountains are places where Heaven and Earth meet, symbolic of transcendence and a human need to elevate mind, body and spirit. As long as our types have walked the Earth, hilltops and mountains have provided a powerful means of escape and spiritual retreat, a way to literally rise above the demands and hustle of everyday life. The three of them are all adults now, birds that have successfully flown the nest.

We are proud papas. Jack wrote, filmed, edited and narrated most of the film in partnership with two of his Periclean colleagues. As he reminded me the other day during one of our weekly phone conversations from Israel, his unexpected pilgrimage to the mountaintop came at a critical moment of his junior year when he had burned out from too much work and not enough rest.

In addition to his studies, he was burning the candle at both ends, teaching himself to make films and working as an editor on the school newspaper. It was a moment of real clarity and freedom. Jack and his fellow Pericleans paused on the ancient. On the way up, they passed — or were passed by — the young and old, the healthy and feeble, men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes, rich and poor, trudging ever upward.

We stood in the courtyard of that temple sweaty and tired but also incredibly happy and at peace. It was very moving. I caught some of it on film. It was just what I needed. A year after he made Elephants in the Room, his more ambitious and technically refined film about a pioneering rural health care organization in India got shown at a World Health Organization gathering in Paris.

His sophomore achievement ultimately landed him a job at one of the top documentary houses before he went on to graduate school at Columbia, met his wife and began a promising career as an independent filmmaker. I saw a nice change in my son after he came down from that sacred mountain: a fresh resolve, a clearer mind. During our recent phone chat from Israel, I asked if he ever thinks about his climb to the mountaintop on. I still think about that climb from time to time.

It was an experience that stays with you. I was 50 at the time. Jack was But I never made it to the top. My dodgy knees gave out a thousand feet below the summit, prompting me to rest my weary legs at the ranger station beside Chimney Pond while Jack and his teenage buddies scampered up Cathedral Trail to the summit.

Ranchers today are committed to raising their herds naturally and work hard to accommodate the natural behaviors of the bison, allowing them to roam freely.

The U. Department of Agriculture does not allow bison to be raised using growth hormones. These naturally raised bison interact with their environment as nature intended — promoting healthy ecosystems and animals. This is a far cry from the standards of the commercial factory farming methods. Bison meat is naturally flavorful, tender, nutrient dense, high in minerals, and lower in fat and cholesterol than beef, chicken and even salmon. Sales of bison meat have steadily increased as people discover that it is not only healthy and delicious, but also environmentally friendly.

You can substitute it for beef in recipes, but beware — it is lower in fat, so be careful not to overcook it. The popularity of Keto and Paleo diets have increased the demand for ways to get the healthy protein people need on these diets. Bison is a great choice when planning the menu for the holidays. It was reeling from the recent death of its young and inspirational president, Edward Kidder Graham, and facing the challenges of dealing with an inadequate and worn-out set of campus buildings, along with a post-war explosion of enrollees. At the time Graham became president, approximately 1, students were enrolled.

The campus consisted primarily of a few buildings gathered around the South Building and Old Well. Classrooms and living quarters were crowded and in bad condition. In his brief time as president, the youthful and charismatic Graham pushed the university to reach out across the state. He traveled throughout the state and delivered moving speeches about the role of education in improving the lives of North Carolinians.

His death shortly after the war ended left the university without a magnetic and motivational figure to carry out his plans and vision. Chase had the plans, but lacked sufficient resources from the state. However, he had an energetic organizer in the form of Frank Porter Graham, a cousin of Ed Graham and a junior faculty member. The state had never seen such an uprising of average citizens who had come together so quickly behind a common cause. Earlier rallies around education had been directed from the top down, with a political figure in the lead.

This time, the people were ahead of their political leaders, who eventually came on board. By , when Chase left UNC to lead the University of Illinois, the UNC campus had more than doubled in size, and the student body approached 3,, including graduate students.

His successor was Frank Graham. The state legislature considered and came close to passing a law to prohibit teaching of evolution. During the hearings on the proposal, one such professor,. Rather, he was an educator and he could speak on the importance of the freedom of the mind.

His strong defense of freedom of speech gained him admiration of the faculty and many people throughout the state. But his defense of freedom was not absolute. He could be practical. When Cobb wrote a book about evolution and the newly organized UNC Press planned to publish it, Chase vetoed the idea. Martin hosts North Carolina Bookwatch Sunday at 11 a. I think we need a movie like that right now. PS Wiley Cash lives in Wilmington with his wife and their two daughters. His latest novel, The Last Ballad, is available wherever books are sold.

Southern Pines Tues - Fri 11 to 5, Saturday 11 to 4 Bennett St, Southern Pines. There is no way that sentence could have come from my keyboard prior to , when I started dating Ohio-born Jen, whose sporting interests start and end with Buckeye football. Jen keeps track of the Buckeyes like a meteorologist watching a hurricane, then, when college football season is over, contentedly returns to reading, cooking or needlepoint.

Washington has had only nine winning seasons since , and although things are looking up for the Tar Heels with the return of coach Mack Brown, he is not a miracle worker. I had NFL bed sheets, a Redskins toboggan and jacket, and was glued to the television every time they played.

But the Jurgensen-led offense could always move the ball, as evidenced in a victory over the New York Giants in , the total points still an NFL regular season record. I remember well the joy of the Super Bowl, when Washington finally won the big one.

I drove to Charlotte to watch the game with my. Washington was Super Bowl champion again in and In that decade I was well rewarded for many years of football futility, but recently, with the wayward team management, those highlight memories seem very distant. The Tar Heels played some of their finest football when I was in school at Chapel Hill, no surprise given their roster included Lawrence Taylor on defense and Kelvin Bryant on offense. In , when UNC was and traveled to perennially good Oklahoma, there hardly had been a bigger Carolina football game.

Carolina won the rest of its games that season, concluding with a victory over Texas in the Bluebonnet Bowl, the only time I was in the Astrodome. Our seats were way up high, but the Buckeyes and The Best Damn Band in the Land were great, and so was the weather, gloriously warm and sunny. Final score: Ohio State 77, Bowling Green The Buckeyes were scoring plenty of points in their early games this season, guided by quarterback Justin Fields, whose name makes their games even more fun for this fan.

On Nov. Encore matinee Saturday. Get tickets while they last. Well, kind of. It is true that you will not find me behind any bar, besides the one in my apartment. I got the idea to chime in on this because of an Instagram post I read the other day from a popular online magazine. With a mix of avid supporters and vocal detractors, the practice of putting cocktails on tap is controversial as some ask: Are draft cocktails taking the craft out of craft cocktails? Sound off below.

Now, the folks that are skeptical, or are just adamantly opposed to this style of drink, might be voicing opinions based on experiences in cocktail lounges. Indeed, it does. I agree with that as well. And then there were those that just had a crap cocktail that came from a keg.

First impressions are lasting, and to those that experienced a bad drink on draft, I get it. My turn. Draught cocktails do help bars get out a drink when it's very busy and, sure, there are some that do it exclusively. And I like that.

Now get to it. But wait. So, what am I saying? Fingers crossed. I totally understand the purists out there. However, Reverie has legs. There are waaaayyy more Average Joe bars than there are craft cocktail bars in this nation. I like those odds. It's a humble dish, but so very satisfying on so many levels.

Perhaps you'd like a crack at it, too. The recipe pairs two iconic fall superstars, sweet potatoes and apples, and the resulting marriage blends as comfortingly as turkey and stuffing. You can make a big dish of it at the beginning of the week and spoon it onto your plate as a side dish or, dessert all week. Sweet potatoes and apples — one is a root vegetable, and one is a fruit.

Just use regular old orange sweet potatoes and any apples. I'm especially fond of Granny Smiths and Honeycrisps in this dish, but often use several varieties — whatever is available. The recipe is simple: Chop up some of both, drizzle with some wet stuff and spices, and roast until soft and bubbly.

More on that later. Of course, this simple dish is not Thanksgiving-worthy, but only because every family has their own iconic dishes to trot out each Turkey Day. Otherwise, sweet potatoes-and-apples are the belly-filling, late-fall dish at our house, great to serve with pork, turkey leftovers, grilled cranberry and Brie sandwiches or just by itself. We know we're supposed to eat five to nine fruits and vegetables a day for better health.

I find this dish a most pleasant option to knock out at least two. Pectin and mild acids found in apples help fight body toxins, aid digestion and pep up the whole system. Pectin also has been associated with helping to keep cholesterol levels in balance and is significant in helping to reduce the incidence of certain types of heart disease.

And, as we approach cold season, November is the time to consume apples. Studies have demonstrated a correlation between regular apple consumption and a reduced incidence of colds and other upper respiratory ailments. Sweet potatoes are full of soluble and insoluble fiber — good for gut health — and packed with vitamins, too. In fact, one cup of baked orange sweet potato, with skin, provides more than seven times the amount of betacarotene than the average adult needs per day So much for health.

You couldn't eat more local. For almost 50 years, North Carolina has been the top sweet potato-producing state in the nation. While we may wilt in heat and humidity, the humble sweet potato thrives. In , North Carolina dug and marketed over 1. North Carolina grows more sweet potatoes than the rest of the United States combined. And the Tar Heel State holds its own with apples, too. North Carolina ranks seventh nationally in apple production.

Up to 4 million bushels of apples can be produced in a given year. How about them apples? As for taste, these two fall friends not only marry well, they invite others to share their autumnal happiness. To the chopped or cubed, or sliced dish I have added, variously, a drizzle of maple, sugar-free ginger syrup, or honey.

Some prefer brown sugar — or no sweetener at all. Chopped orange peel not the white pith, but the outer orange rind also. With over fabric bolts on hand and over 30, samples to order from, you are sure to discover exactly what you want. Even crumbled bacon adds a compatible twist. For variety, I might top with roasted pecans or walnuts, or throw in a handful or two of fresh, washed cranberries.

A can of Mandarin oranges mixes in well with the basics too. Cautious cook? Give yourself permission to experiment with this dish and your favorite flavors. Mix and match — combine ginger-orange, say, or maple-pecan, or even cranberry-walnut. In our house, we top the whole shebang with dabs of butter or coconut oil — hey, it's fall, and it's chilly!

Near the end of the cooking, you could even add a splash of bourbon, rum, Calvados or Grand Marnier to class up the humble fall fare. This is one of those dishes that tastes better and better as the days move along. By the third day the flavors have married so well, and we eat it so heartily, it's time to make another batch.

So, chop up some sweets and apples, and toss them in the oven to roast. Still want a recipe? Here is a good starting point, from Bon Apetit magazine. Adjust it to fit your tastes. The basic recipe is very forgiving — and tastes just like fall. In 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish, alternate potato and apple slices in rows, packing tightly.

Combine remaining ingredients in heavy medium saucepan and bring to boil over high heat. Pour hot syrup over potatoes and apples. Cover dish tightly with foil and bake 1 hour. Uncover casserole. Can be prepared 3 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature, basting occasionally with pan juices.

Bake until potatoes and apples are very tender and syrup is reduced to thick glaze, basting occasionally, about 45 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes. PS Jan Leitschuh is a local gardener, avid eater of fresh produce and co-founder of the Sandhills Farm to Table cooperative. It also means a change in what I like to drink and, of course, I love deciding what to pair with Thanksgiving. One of my all-time favorite wines for fall and Thanksgiving is syrah, or shiraz.

In general, Southern Hemisphere growing regions like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will refer to their wines as shiraz, while Northern Hemisphere producers in Europe and the United States will call their wines syrah. Sounds like fall to me. For a great value I look to the Southern Hemisphere. Nine Stones Shiraz from the Barossa Valley in Australia is a medium-bodied wine with a little hint of eucalyptus and cocoa.

For a bigger, richer style, Fess Parker Syrah from Santa Barbara County, California, is rich and concentrated without being too much for the Thanksgiving turkey. Syrah grapes from the Santa Rita AVA American Viticultural Area benefit from the combination of steady and continuous breezes coming off the Pacific, and the dense fog that rolls in over the mountains, keeping the vines protected from the heavy sun, and allowing for ideal ripening.

Both wines will shine next to all kinds of other holiday meats, too, especially. For a starter, pair with a tasty, tangy goat cheese like Cypress Groves Bermuda Triangle. Drizzle with a little honey and serve with dried cherries. Trying something a little off-dry this time of year pairs perfectly with autumn-spiced desserts, like spice cake, and rich hearty dishes. I love the diversity of riesling. While many rieslings are off-dry — slightly sweet — many are dry.

Hints of traditional stone fruits and citrus blossoms, backed with a touch of acidity, make the wine light enough but structured, complementing heavy sides like vegetable casseroles and stuffing at the Thanksgiving table. It can follow you to the dessert table or help you start the meal off. Pair it with Purple Haze, a fresh goat cheese made in Northern California, that has added lavender and fennel pollen.

The racy bite of the goat cheese and its floral notes help to balance the fruity wine. For dessert, a pineapple upside-down cake or carrot cake both have the richness to cut through the slightly sweet, slightly acidic characteristics of the riesling. The rieslings of this area are rich and complex. The cooler climate and heavily mineral-driven soils make for wines with more petrol on the nose and rounder, slightly viscous palates.

Lemon curd and lemon zest characteristics in Roeno Riesling from Trento, Italy, are a nice accompaniment to the richness of fried turkey and mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving. The acidity and minerality of the wine pair nicely with a robust cheese like Appalachian, made in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains by Meadow Creek Dairy.

She was in the wine industry for 20 years and lucky enough to travel the world drinking wine and eating cheese. My brother was an experienced hand at such affairs, having bought and sold — often at a profit — over a hundred classic cars. My favorite brand from the era was Mercury.

He got all excited. I was keenly aware I had no business purchasing an antique car. In younger days, I occasionally tried changing a tire or an oil filter, but my ineffectual efforts invariably led to injury to the car or myself.

Furthermore, I was uncomfortable with the concept of spending serious money on a vehicle that I would not be driving regularly. There was no way I was going to enter the bidding. Just then, a cream-colored Ford DeLuxe convertible came on the block, and Tom was immediately smitten. He decided to enter the fray. Ultimately, Tom added the Ford to his burgeoning collection. A talented auctioneer can create an atmosphere that causes folks to shout out bids they never intended to make.

Or maybe I wanted to show my big brother that I could play this auction game, too. But, wait. I was off the hook several minutes later when the auctioneer announced that my bid had failed to meet the minimum. Love the course layout If you have NEW we all make mistakes! I look forward to many years of golf together thanks to this program. Tom was downcast as he had looked forward to my joining him in classic car collecting. I did not have the heart to convey my relief at dodging a bullet. The reprieve, however, proved to be short-lived. I tried to put up roadblocks, but Tom easily knocked them down.

I confessed my second thoughts about coughing up money for an antique car, but he rebutted that by pointing out the price was substantially less than I had been willing to spend at the Auburn auction. When I raised a concern about the expense of shipping the car to Columbus from Arkansas, Tom brushed it aside. The seller had agreed to handle the mile transport at his own expense. I caved. Once the deal was made, I cast aside my doubts, adopting an attitude of eager anticipation as I awaited the appearance of my new toy.

When the Merc arrived along with the Walk the Line movie set photo , I was delighted. Tom was right; this was the car for me. Though five years newer, this Merc looked a lot like the black James Dean auto that had originally attracted me to the brand. The over-sized steering wheel and unusual joystick levers that controlled the heater and vents also appealed to me.

At first, the car ran beautifully, and I took pleasure in returning the appreciative waves of pedestrians and horn beeps of fellow motorists, most of whom smiled broadly when observing this relic of the distant past.

Initially a skeptic of the purchase, significant other now wife Lisa was now taking to the Merc, enjoying our summer evenings motoring to the Dairy Queen. I thought this info would be enough to bluff my way through encounters with car guys.

Not so much. Me: V Me: Ah, it has horsepower. Typically, the auto mavens found this disclosure deeply disappointing as though my lack of ardor for diving under the. Everything for the avid golfer. Our conversations ended quickly. This null set of car knowledge was bound to catch up with me, however, and it did after the Merc began stalling at inopportune times, nearly always when Lisa occupied the passenger seat. In one unfortunate incident that I have tried to forget, the Monterey sputtered to a halt next to a biker bar in a dodgy part of town a few miles from our home. It took 30 tense minutes, but I finally got the recalcitrant sedan running again.

My hope was to nurse the Merc back to the house, where I could exchange it for my regular car and, assuming Lisa would not want to risk being stranded on the interstate, I suggested she remain at the bar.

The idea was not greeted with universal gratitude for my thoughtfulness. Someone I knew recommended his neighbor, Shane, who moonlighted performing mechanical miracles on antique cars. Upon meeting him, I confess I was not all that impressed, but Shane assured me he could make the fix. Not presently aware of other alternatives, I consented to have him undertake the job. A week later, Shane pronounced the Merc good as new. And for a week, it was.

I persuaded Lisa it was safe to get back inside. Then, on a crisp fall night enjoying an outing on Riverside Drive, as we commenced a long, uphill climb, our respective hearts skipped beats when the engine suddenly stalled and the Merc stopped cold on the highway. It was pitch dark and the black car had no flashers. No berm existed alongside the road, just a guardrail about a foot off the edge of the right lane.

I feverishly restarted the car. It crept a few yards up the hill and stalled out again. In full panic mode, I begged Lisa to get out and push. This was only marginally better than my biker bar idea. I doubt whether a gym full of heavyweight powerlifters. Vehicles whizzing by were being forced to make last-second maneuvers into the oncoming lane to avoid the Merc. Somehow I had to find a way to get it up to the summit of the hill a quarter mile away. Lisa was justifiably scared and so was I.

We breathed a joint sigh of relief and coasted down to safety. Lisa was correct. If the car could not be safely operated, it had to go. At a neighborhood party, my sympathetic friend, Sid, recommended I take the car to the local Mercury dealer. The dealership sent me to Rennie, a year employee who had repaired dozens of vintage Mercs like mine.

After Rennie worked his magic, the Mercury purred like a kitten. I drove it often in Columbus, recording in excess of 25, miles on the odometer over 10 years. The Monterey was running pretty much on all cylinders before Lisa and I moved to Pinehurst in October Though no longer comparing the Merc to Christine, she nonetheless thought that after a decade of ownership, it was time to get rid of the old boy.

We had too much history together. It found a new home in Pinehurst, too. I was lucky to discover an able mechanic, Dean, at Resto-Euro in Aberdeen, who has the car running smoothly. If any other Mercurys are still on the road in North Carolina, I suspect that plate would have been previously snapped up. He can be reached at Bill. Case thompsonhine. Finding Calm in the Chaos www. Malassezia spp are normal commensals and occasional pathogens of the skin for many veterinary species, and M pachydermatis is a very common cause of otitis and pruritic dermatitis in dogs.

This chapter will focus on the epidemiologic, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of dermatophytosis and Malassezia dermatitis in veterinary species. There are generally only sporadic reports of other superficial mycoses, such as candidiasis, piedra, and Rhodotorula dermatitis in veterinary medicine, and these are not included here. Copyright Elsevier Inc. Even Better Than the Real Thing? Xenografting in Pediatric Patients with Scald Injury. Perceptions of tap water temperatures, scald risk and prevention among parents and older people in social housing: a qualitative study. Young children and older people are particularly vulnerable to tap water scalding.

For children, there are also socio-economic inequalities in risk. Evidence suggests that reducing tap water temperatures in social public housing through 'passive' means is effective in reducing risk. However, little is known about parents' or older people's perceptions of scald risk and prevention. This study aimed to document the views of parents and older residents in social housing in an inner-London borough about their tap water temperature, perceived scalding risk and scald prevention strategies.

Analysis of twenty in-depth interviews with 11 parents and 10 people aged 65 years or older. Tap water was described as very hot, but participants did not consider themselves at risk, viewing scald prevention as a personal responsibility achieved with a range of everyday, routine strategies. Very hot water was preferred for health- and convenience-related reasons. However, it was felt that others, particularly children, could be scalded , and some concern was expressed about the environmental and financial impacts of excessively hot water.

Those seeking to introduce engineering-based scald prevention interventions in social housing should emphasise the potential environmental and financial impacts of water temperature reduction, in addition to promoting safety benefits for vulnerable others. Superficial fungal infections. Superficial fungal infections arise from a pathogen that is restricted to the stratum corneum, with little or no tissue reaction. In this Seminar, three types of infection will be covered: tinea versicolor, piedra, and tinea nigra.

Tinea versicolor is common worldwide and is caused by Malassezia spp, which are human saprophytes that sometimes switch from yeast to pathogenic mycelial form. Malassezia furfur, Malassezia globosa, and Malassezia sympodialis are most closely linked to tinea versicolor. White and black piedra are both common in tropical regions of the world; white piedra is also endemic in temperate climates.

Black piedra is caused by Piedraia hortae; white piedra is due to pathogenic species of the Trichosporon genus. Tinea nigra is also common in tropical areas and has been confused with melanoma. Biobrane versus topical agents in the treatment of adult scald burns. Limited data is available for treatment of scald lesions in adults. We therefore assessed the effect of different treatment options in adult scalds in our center. We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult patients that have been admitted with scalds in our center between and Primary outcome variables were rate of secondary deepening, surgery, infection defined as positive microbiological swabs and antibiotic treatment and length of stay.

Total body surface area TBSA as well as diabetes mellitus DM , hypertension, smoking and alcohol consumption as potential confounders were included. A total of 52 patients were included in this study. Rate of secondary deepening, surgery, infection as well as days of hospital stay DOHS were comparable. Level 3 - retrospective cohort study. Effect of nano-silver hydrogel coating film on deep partial thickness scald model of rabbit.

Summary A preventable subgroup of burn injuries is scalds sustained from motor vehicle radiators. This study was to determine changes in trends in epidemiology of such injuries and to discuss whether current and other prevention efforts proposed previously require reinforcement. We conducted a retrospective study February August of all motor vehicle-related burn referrals to our regional burns service. Male to female ratio was Mean age was The depths of burn injuries were mostly superficial partial thickness.

Face, chest and upper limbs were the most common sites of injury. Mean healing time was Following the introduction of safety measures by vehicle manufacturers, motor vehicle radiator burns in this era are mostly minor injuries and can be potentially managed conservatively as an outpatient.

This contrasts with findings from previous studies over a decade ago of larger, more significant injuries requiring admission and surgery. Whilst manufacturers have installed safety measures into the design of radiator caps, our findings suggest that re-educating the public to allow a period of cooling prior to opening caps should be reinforced. The burning issues of motor vehicle radiator scald injuries revisited - a fresh review and changing prevention strategies.

A preventable subgroup of burn injuries is scalds sustained from motor vehicle radiators. To explore the preventive and treatment effects of smectite powder on enteral bacterial translocation in scalded rats. Fifty-four Sprague-Dawley SD rats were randomly divided into three groups, i.

Smectite powder 0. Bacterial translocation in blood and mesenteric lymph nodes in all groups was observed and identified by enzyme digestion at 12 post scald hour PSH and on 1, 3 and 5 post- scald days PSD. And the degree of injury to the entire small intestine was observed pathologically. The villus height of intestinal mucosa was measured, and the rate of epithelial nuclear splitting of mucosal crypts was calculated. The number of rats with positive blood bacterial culture in B group was obviously higher than that in A and T groups P scalded rats, and can effectively prevent postburn intestinal bacterial translocation.

Hot tea and tiny tots don't mix: A cross-sectional survey on hot beverage scalds. Hot beverage scalds are a leading cause of burns in young children. The aim of this study was to look at the circumstances surrounding these injuries in terms of setting, mechanism, supervision and first aid to inform a prevention campaign. A cross-sectional study was delivered via iPad to parents and caregivers presenting with a child aged months with a hot beverage scald at a major paediatric burns centre.

Of the children aged months that presented with a hot beverage scald over a month period, 54 participants were included. The scald aetiology was as expected with the peak prevalence in children aged months, pulling a cup of hot liquid down over themselves. The majority of injuries occurred in the child's home and were witnessed by the caregiver or parent.

The supervising adult was often in close proximity when the scald occurred. While the aetiology of these scalds were as expected, the low use of recommended burn first aid was of concern. Attentiveness and continuity of supervision, which can be difficult with competing parental demands, appear to play a more important role role; as do considerations of other safety mechanisms such as hazard reduction through keeping hot drinks out of reach and engineering factors such as improved cup design.

By incorporating the findings from this study and other research into a hot beverage scald prevention campaign, we hope to see a change in knowledge and behaviour in parents and caregivers of young children, and ultimately a reduction in the incidence of hot beverage scalds.

Staphylococcus aureus is often responsible for late septic infections, more rarely of toxinic ones, occurring in neonatal period. We report a case of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and bullous impetigo in newborn twins infected by breast milk from their asymptomatic mother.

This transmission was confirmed by molecular biology method. This case emphasizes the potential part of the mother in staphylococcal nosocomial infections and the complexity of toxinic mechanisms. ORAC analysis showed that the origin and scalding process affected the antioxidant activity which correlated strongly with capsaicin content.

Scalding in Turkish children: comparison of burns caused by hot water and hot milk. Our aim in this study was to compare the clinical differences and etiologic risk factors for hot water and hot milk scald burns in Turkish children. The retrospective study examined the cases of children aged 0. The patients were categorized in two groups: hot water burns or hot milk burns.

Ninety-five The proportion of patients with hot milk burns who lived in rural areas was significantly higher than the corresponding proportion for the hot water cases To create effective programs for preventing scald injuries in Turkey and elsewhere, it is essential to consider ethnic and cultural issues based on these characteristics. Simple precautions should be explained and methods of.

The microbiology of apples and apple products. The apple industry has reached an annual production level of 8. To achieve high quality in raw fruit and processed apple products, careful attention must be paid to maintaining a microbiologically stable environment. The ecology of the microflora associated with the apple is a reflection of the orchard, handling, harvesting, and storage practices. Yeasts predominate on orchard fruit, molds may become a storage problem, and bacteria cause spoilage, off flavors, and loss of quality in juice products.

Despite the microbial problems inherent in producing of quality product, the apple industry is faced with the occurrence of patulin. Patulin, a mycotoxin produced by Penicillium and Aspergillus species, has been associated with damaged fruit. Decreased temperatures, coupled with CA storage; can deter mold growth and patulin production. Laboratory detection methods for derivations of patulin are able to detect microgram quantities. Means to eliminate patulin formed in apple products include addition of ascorbate and SO2, extending fermentation, or charcoal filtering.

However, degradation products of patulin have not been evaluated toxicologically. The Apple IIc. Description of the portable Apple IIc includes its flat panel display; a new microprocessor, the 65CO2; its new design language; layout; documentation, including interactive tutorials; software support; and cost. Superficial ulnar artery perforator flap. Superficial ulnar artery is a rare finding but shows significant surgical implications. Its thinness and pliability make this flap an excellent solution for soft tissue reconstruction, especially in the head and neck region. We hereby report a successful free superficial ulnar artery perforator forearm flap transfer for tongue reconstruction.

A year-old man presenting with a squamous cell carcinoma of the left tongue underwent a wide resection of the tumor, left radical neck dissection, and reconstruction of the tongue and the left tonsillar pillar with the mentioned flap. No complications were observed postoperatively.

The flap survived completely; no recurrence at 6 months of follow-up was detected. Superficial ulnar artery perforator flap has shown to be a safe alternative to other free tissue flaps in specific forearm anatomic conditions. Is cupping blister harmful? Cupping therapy has a long history in traditional medicine especially in Asian countries. It was controversial whether cupping induced blisters are beneficial to healing effects, and the formation and content in the blisters remain unexplored.

We aimed to identify and compare the molecular components of the blister fluid from the cupping therapy and the scalds to explore the necessary of inducing cupping induced blisters. Fluid sample of blisters from fifteen patients receiving cupping therapy Cupping group and scald burns Scald group were collected in this study.

Proteins from the blisters were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis 2D-gel and further analyzed by mass spectrometry. In addition, the changes in particular proteins were confirmed by Western blotting. The protein components are significantly different between blister from cupping therapy and scalds.

The immune responses, oxidative stress and metabolic related proteins Ig lambda-2 chain C regions, Ig gamma-1 chain C region, hemopexin, prdx2, calmodulin, succinyl-CoA ligase and tetranectin were increased, whereas the hemoglobin subunit beta was decreased in the Cupping group compared with the Scald group. Cupping induced blisters contain several proteins which relate to the activation of certain immune pathways including anti-oxidation, anti-apoptosis, tissue repairing and metabolic regulation.

This proteomic analysis may indicate a significant clue to the mechanism study of cupping. Apple rootstock evaluation for apple replant disease. Twenty-nine rootstocks from the Cornell-Geneva rootstock breeding program, some Budagovski rootstocks, M. Bench grafted rootstocks were planted in pots with two types of soil —clay loam and sandy l Pediatric scalds : do cooking-related burns have a higher injury burden? Pediatric scald burns result in frequent emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

We investigated whether cooking-related burns produce greater morbidity requiring more extensive care than noncooking burns. We performed a 6-y review at our free-standing children's hospital. Children aged scald burns were included. The Mann-Whitney U test, a chi-square test, and the negative binomial were used to compare continuous, categorical, and count data between groups.

Bivariate analysis was performed to identify risk factors among patients with adverse outcomes. Patients with complications were more likely to have third degree burns and required more consults, longer hospitalization, and more surgical debridements and clinic visits. Most accidental scald burns occurred in young children during food preparation. Greater long-term morbidity was found in patients with semisolid and grease burns.

This subset of children has a higher injury burden and requires extensive care in the acute and long-term setting. An unsuspected cause of meal-time morbidity: instant noodle scald burns. Observational analysis revealed a concerning frequency of scald burns secondary to instant noodles.

A literature review reveals studies with small sample sizes of pediatric populations and analysis of container engineering. The adult cohort, treatments, and short-term outcomes have been neglected. Considering these deficiencies, we reviewed our institution's experience with burns secondary to instant noodles. Patient encounters due to instant noodle burns from January 1, , through May 15, , were reviewed. Demographics, burn characteristics, treatment, length of stay, number of operative interventions, and complications were analyzed.

Eight hundred fifty-two patients were seen were admitted for scald burns of all pathogenesis. Of these, 48 were older than age 4 group 1 , and 73 were younger than age 4 group 2. TBSA was 2. Seven patients in group 1 and two patients in group 2 required operative intervention. Length of stay in groups 1 and 2 were 3. Noodle scald burns cause morbidity at all ages. Pediatric burns due to noodles are frequently managed conservatively but more often necessitate inpatient treatment.

The nonpediatric population has larger TBSA and requires more frequent operative intervention. The morbidity of noodle burns is significant. Increased public education and container re-engineering is warranted. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome in a premature newborn caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: case report. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is an exfoliative skin disease. Reports of this syndrome in newborns caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are rare but, when present, rapid diagnosis and treatment is required in order to decrease morbidity and mortality.

A premature newly born girl weighing 1, g, born with a gestational age of 29 weeks and 4 days, developed staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome on the fifth day of life. Cultures on blood samples collected on the first and fourth days were negative, but Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus sp.

In addition to these two Gram-negative bacilli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in a culture on the umbilical stump seventh day. The diagnosis of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome was based on clinical criteria. Epidemiology of paediatric burns in Lithuania: focus on a vulnerable population exposed to the risk of scalds at home without hot tap water supply. To describe the epidemiology of paediatric burns in Lithuania, identify the trends of burn occurrence, the vulnerable population and aetiology.

This study was based on all inclusive national information obtained from the National Health Insurance database for the period of The incidence among boys was The highest risk of burns was observed from 11 to 15 months of age. Children younger than 2 years of age are a vulnerable population of burns in Lithuania. Scalding was main cause of their burns. The major part of scalding with hot drinks was due to scalding with parents' drinks.

Scalding with hot water meant for household is associated with the lack of hot water supply. Superficial Priming in Episodic Recognition. We explored the effect of superficial priming in episodic recognition and found it to be different from the effect of semantic priming in episodic recognition. Participants made recognition judgments to pairs of items, with each pair consisting of a prime item and a test item.

Correct positive responses to the test item were impeded if the prime…. Furukawa with apple. ISSE 2 Nov. Apple Coffee Cake. Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli on broiler carcasses subjected to a high pH scald and low pH postpick chlorine dip. The objective of this study was to determine the individual and combined effects of a high pH scald and a postpick chlorine dip on bacteria present on broiler carcasses. In each of 3 replications, a flock was sampled at several sites within a commercial broiler processing plant. Carcasses were sampled by whole carcass rinse before and after treated scalding at mean pH 9.

Other carcasses from the same flock run on both the treated and control scald lines were collected and sampled before and after a chlorine dip tank operated at mean total chlorine level of Rinses were cultured for numbers of Campylobacter and Escherichia coli and presence or absence of Salmonella. High pH scald was more effective than standard scald to lessen the prevalence and numbers of Campylobacter on broiler carcasses; a lower prevalence was maintained through the postpick chlorine dip tank.

The pH of the scald tank made no difference in numbers of E. High pH scald was not more effective than standard scald to lessen Salmonella prevalence. Furthermore, it is unclear why the postpick chlorine dip effectively lessened Salmonella prevalence on only the control scald line. Although no evidence exists that these treatments have an additive effect when used in series, each treatment shows some promise individually.

Further optimization may result in more effective decontamination of broiler carcasses. Mouse burn models are used to understand the wound healing process and having a reproducible model is important. The different protocols used by researchers can lead to differences in depth of partial-thickness burn wounds. Additionally, standardizing a protocol for mouse burns in the laboratory for one strain may result in substantially different results in other strains.

Final results were validated with pathology analysis. Other than temperature and time, factors such as template materials and cooling steps after the burn could affect the uniformity of the burns. These findings are useful to burn research by providing some key parameters essential for researchers to simplify the development of their own mouse burn models.

Scald wound of a treated animal 16 days after the second split-thickness skin graft harvesting. A Gross appearance Microbiology and evisceration efficiency of broiler carcasses slaughtered and held up to 8 hours postmortem prior to scalding and defeathering.

The implementation of on farm slaughter could eliminate potential animal welfare issues associated with cooping, transport, dumping, and shackling live broilers. This research evaluated evisceration efficiency and the microbiological implications of delaying scalding and defeathering for up to 8 h a Feather retention force in broiler carcasses slaughtered and held up to 8 hours postmortem prior to scalding. One factor that could impact the feasibility of commercial on-farm slaughter of broilers is the time delay from on-farm slaughter to scalding and defeathering in the commercial plant that could be 4 h or more.

This experiment evaluated feather retention force FRF in broilers that were slaughtered An outbreak of listeriosis in late and early associated with caramel apples led to questions about how this product became a vector for Listeria monocytogenes. This investigation aimed to determine information about the survival and growth of L. At a high inoculation level 7 log CFU per apple , L. Fresh apples and caramel apples inoculated at the equatorial surface supported survival but not growth of the pathogen.

At a low inoculation level 3 log CFU per apple , L. Although certain conditions did not support growth, the pathogen was always detectable by enrichment culture. Variation in stick materials did affect L. Lack of a standardised UK care pathway resulting in national variations in management and outcomes of paediatric small area scalds. There is a paucity of evidence guiding management of small area partial thickness paediatric scalds.

This has prevented the development of national management guidelines for these injuries. Skin graft rates of anonymised burns services over seven years were collected from the international Burns Injury Database iBID. Average skin grafting rates across services were compared. Length of stay and proportion of patients receiving general anaesthesia for dressing application at each service were also compared. All 14 burns services responded to the survey.

There was no consensus as to which scalds should be treated using biosynthetic dressings. Data from iBID for 11, patients showed that the average reported skin grafting rate across all burns services was 2. There is also significant variation in outcomes for these injuries.

Further research is indicated to determine if care pathways and outcomes are linked. An evidence. Endoscopic therapies have become the standard of care for most cases of Barrett's esophagus with high-grade dysplasia or intramucosal adenocarcinoma.

Despite a rapid and dramatic evolution in treatment paradigms, esophagectomy continues to occupy a place in the therapeutic armamentarium for superficial esophageal neoplasia. The managing physician must remain cognizant of the limitations of endoscopic approaches and consider surgical resection when they are exceeded. Esophagectomy, performed at experienced centers for appropriately selected patients with early-stage disease can be undertaken with the expectation of cure as well as low mortality, acceptable morbidity, and good long-term quality of life.

Experimental research and observation of the skin response of mice with a second-degree scald during irradiation by a CO2 laser. Second-degree scalding is a common dermatological injury. Inappropriate treatment methods in clinical practice always produce scarring, and can lead to skin cancer and other complications in the longer term.

In this study optical coherence tomography OCT combined with a skin detector was used to monitor the response of second-degree scalded skin tissue irradiated by a CO2 laser. The process of treatment of second-degree scalding was systematically studied from the perspective of tissue optics.

The results help us to understand tissue injury in a second-degree scald and may help improve the standard treatment. Scalds are a common injury in children and a frequent reason for hospitalisation despite being a preventable injury.

This retrospective two year study reports data from children aged 14 years or younger who sustained a scald between and and were admitted to a burns centre in Australia or New Zealand. This study highlights that effective burn first aid reduces hospital stay and reinforces the need to encourage, carers and bystanders to deliver effective first aid and the importance of targeted prevention campaigns that reduce the burden of pediatric scald burns in Australia and New Zealand.

To observe the effects of astragalus polysaccharide AP on the intestinal mucosal morphology, level of secretory IgA s-IgA in intestinal mucus, and distribution of T lymphocyte subsets in Peyer's patch in rats with severe scald injury. Ten rats from group SI immediately after injury and 10 rats from each of the latter 4 groups on post injury day PID 3, 7, 14 were sacrificed, and their intestines were harvested.

Data were processed with one-way analysis of variance, analysis of variance of factorial design, and SNK test. On PID 7, no obvious improvement in intestinal mucosal lesion was observed in groups with scalded rats. On PID 14, the pathology in intestinal mucosa of rats remained nearly the same in group S, and it was alleviated obviously.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of additives such as plants belonging to Lamiaceae family Thymus vulgaris, Carum carvi, Origanum vulgare, Ocimum basilicum, and Coriandrum sativum , scalded flour SF or scalded flour fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum LUHS SFFLp on the quality and acrylamide formation in wheat bread.

The formation of acrylamide and bread quality significantly depended on the king of plants used and the amount of SF and SFFLp used. The additives of T. Few data exist on the epidemiological characteristics of thermal injuries in prehospital emergency care, especially in the context of air rescue. In total 71 out of 16, 0. More than half of the victims In HEMS thermal injuries are infrequent but mostly life-threatening. Biogas generation apple pulp.

In view of the pressing problem that appears in our region Asturias, north of Spain with the residues from the cider production, it was decided to test this kind of material as a co-substrate joint with slaughterhouse waste in a laboratory unit. The anaerobic digestion of apple pulp was investigated for biogas production. This paper presents the results where apple pulp was co-digested with slaughterhouse waste pig intestine and bovine stomach content in a biogas laboratory unit 10 l CSTR reactor.

The production of biogas has reached very satisfactory values during the whole test 0. Nosocomial outbreak of staphyloccocal scalded skin syndrome in neonates in England, December to March Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome SSSS is a blistering skin condition caused by exfoliative toxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

Outbreaks of SSSS in maternity settings are rarely reported. Detailed epidemiological and microbiological investigations were undertaken. Eight neonates were found to be infected with the outbreak strain of S. All eight isolates contained genes encoding exfoliative toxin A eta and six of them contained genes encoding toxin B etb. Mass screening involving multi-site swabbing and pooled, enrichment culture identified a healthcare worker HCW with the outbreak strain.

This HCW was known to have a chronic skin condition and their initial nasal screen was negative. The outbreak ended when they were excluded from work. This outbreak highlights the need for implementing robust swabbing and culture methodswhen conventional techniques are unsuccessful in identifying staff carrier s.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence on the role of HCWs in nosocomial transmission of S. The exfoliative epidermolytic toxins of Staphylococcus aureus are the causative agents of the staphylococcal scalded -skin syndrome SSSS , a blistering skin disorder that predominantly affects children. Clinical features of SSSS vary along a spectrum, ranging from a few localized blisters to generalized exfoliation covering almost the entire body. The toxins act specifically at the zona granulosa of the epidermis to produce the characteristic exfoliation, although the mechanism by which this is achieved is still poorly understood.

Despite the availability of antibiotics, SSSS carries a significant mortality rate, particularly among neonates with secondary complications of epidermal loss and among adults with underlying diseases. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature spanning more than a century and to cover all aspects of the disease.

The epidemiology, clinical features, potential complications, risk factors, susceptibility, diagnosis, differential diagnoses, investigations currently available, treatment options, and preventive measures are all discussed in detail. Recent crystallographic data on the toxins has provided us with a clearer and more defined approach to studying the disease. Understanding their mode of action has important implications in future treatment and prevention of SSSS and other diseases, and knowledge of their specific site of action may provide a useful tool for physiologists, dermatologists, and pharmacologists.

Varicella infection in a neonate with subsequent staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and fatal shock. A male term neonate, at day 23 of life, presented with vesicular lesions over the trunk, which spread to allover the body on the next day. Five days later, he started developing blistering of the skin over the trunk and extremities, which subsequently ruptured, leaving erythematous, tender raw areas with peeling of the skin. The mother had vesicular eruptions, which started on the second day of delivery and progressed over the next 3 days.

Subsequently, similar eruptions were noticed in two of the siblings before affecting the neonate. On the basis of the exposure history and clinical picture, a diagnosis was made of varicella infection with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome SSSS. The blood culture and the wound surface culture grew Staphylococcus aureus. Treatment included intravenous fluid, antibiotics, acyclovir and wound care. However, after 72 h of hospitalisation, the neonate first developed shock, refractory to fluid boluses, vasopressors and catecholamine along with other supports; and he then succumbed.

In all neonates, staphylococcal infection with varicella can be fatal due to SSSS, the toxic shock syndrome or septicaemia. Enzymatic browning reactions in apple and apple products. This review examines the parameters of enzymatic browning in apple and apple products that is, phenolic compounds, polyphenoloxidases, and other factors ascorbic acid and peroxidases , both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Then the relationships between intensity of browning and the browning parameters are discussed, including a paragraph on the methods used for browning evaluation. Finally, the different methods for the control of browning are presented.

Volatility of patulin in apple juice. Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by certain fungi, such as those found commonly on apples. The patulin content of apple juice is a regulatory concern because patulin is a suspected carcinogen and mutagen. A simple model of the apple juice concentration process was carried out to examine the possible contamination of patulin in apple aroma, a distillate produced commercially in the concentration of apple juice.

The results show no evidence for patulin volatility, and document a reduction in patulin content by at least a factor of in the apple distillate obtained from apple juice. Furthermore, a survey of several commercial apple aroma samples found no evidence of patulin content. The gravity apple tree. The gravity apple tree is a genealogical tree of the gravitation theories developed during the past century. The graphic representation is full of information such as guides in heuristic principles, names of main proponents, dates and references for original articles See under Supplementary Data for the graphic representation.

This visual presentation and its particular classification allows a quick synthetic view for a plurality of theories, many of them well validated in the Solar System domain. Its diachronic structure organizes information in a shape of a tree following similarities through a formal concept analysis. It can be used for educational purposes or as a tool for philosophical discussion.

Management of apple anthracnose canker. In western Washington, it is the canker phase of apple anthracnose that is considered most serious as it can result in death of Smartphone-based grading of apple quality. Apple quality grading is a critical issue in apple industry which is one economical pillar of many countries. Artificial grading is inefficient and of poor accuracy. Here we proposed to develop a portable, convenient, real-time, and low cost method aimed at grading apple.

Color images of the apples were collected with a smartphone and the grade of sampled apple was assessed by a customized smartphone app, which offered the functions translating RGB color values of the apple to color grade and translating the edge of apple image to weight grade.

The algorithms are based on modeling with a large number of apple image at different grades. The apple grade data evaluated by the smartphone are in accordance with the actual data. The domestication and evolutionary ecology of apples. The cultivated apple is a major fruit crop in temperate zones. Its wild relatives, distributed across temperate Eurasia and growing in diverse habitats, represent potentially useful sources of diversity for apple breeding.

We review here the most recent findings on the genetics and ecology of apple domestication and its impact on wild apples. Genetic analyses have revealed a Central Asian origin for cultivated apple , together with an unexpectedly large secondary contribution from the European crabapple.

Wild apple species display strong population structures and high levels of introgression from domesticated apple , and this may threaten their genetic integrity. Recent research has revealed a major role of hybridization in the domestication of the cultivated apple and has highlighted the value of apple as an ideal model for unraveling adaptive diversification processes in perennial fruit crops.

We discuss the implications of this knowledge for apple breeding and for the conservation of wild apples. Superficial white onychomycosis is characterized by opaque, friable, whitish superficial spots on the nail plate. We examined an affected halux nail of a year-old male patient with scanning electron microscopy.

The mycological examination isolated Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Abundant hyphae with the formation of arthrospores were found on the nail's surface, forming small fungal colonies. These findings showed the great capacity for dissemination of this form of onychomycosis. Nosocomial outbreak of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome in neonates: epidemiological investigation and control. Over a three-month period, 13 neonates developed staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome SSSS in a maternity unit, between four and 18 days after their birth.

An epidemiological and descriptive study followed by a case-control study was performed. A case was defined as a neonate with blistering or peeling skin, and exfoliative toxin A Staphylococcus aureus positive cultures. Controls were selected at random from the asymptomatic, non-colonized neonates born on the same day as the cases. All staff members and all neonates born during the outbreak period were screened for carriage by nasal swabs and umbilical swabs, respectively.

Two clusters of eight and five cases were identified. The ancillary nurse suffered from chronic dermatitis on her hands that favoured S. Exfoliative-toxin-A-producing strains, as evidenced by PCR and indistinguishable by PFGE, were isolated from all but one of the SSSS cases, from four asymptomatic neonates, from two staff members and from the ancillary nurse's hands.

Removal of the ancillary nurse from duty, infection control measures isolation precautions, chlorhexidine handwashing and barrier protections , and treatment of the carriers nasal mupirocin and chlorhexidine showers led to control of the epidemic. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the need for tight surveillance of chronic dermatitis in healthcare workers.

Hot soup! Correlating the severity of liquid scald burns to fluid and biomedical properties. Burns caused by hot drinks and soups can be both debilitating and costly, especially to pediatric and geriatric patients. This research is aimed at better understanding the fluid properties that can influence the severity of skin burns.

We use a standard model which combines heat transfer and biomedical equations to predict burn severity. In particular, experimental data from a physical model serves as the input to our numerical model to determine the severity of scald burns as a consequence of actual fluid flows. This technique enables us to numerically predict the heat transfer from the hot soup into the skin, without the need to numerically estimate the complex fluid mechanics and thermodynamics of the potentially highly viscous and heterogeneous soup.

While the temperature of the soup is obviously is the most important fact in determining the degree of burn, we also find that more viscous fluids result in more severe burns, as the slower flowing thicker fluids remain in contact with the skin for longer. Furthermore, other factors can also increase the severity of burn such as a higher initial fluid temperature, a greater fluid thermal conductivity, or a higher thermal capacity of the fluid.

Adenosine triphosphate hydrolysis reduces neutrophil infiltration and necrosis in partial-thickness scald burns in mice. Extracellular adenosine triphosphate ATP , present in thermally injured tissue, modulates the inflammatory response and causes significant tissue damage. The authors hypothesize that neutrophil infiltration and ensuing tissue necrosis would be mitigated by removing ATP-dependent signaling at the burn site.

In the treatment arm, an ATP hydrolyzing enzyme, apyrase, was applied directly to the site immediately after injury. Skin was harvested after 24 hours and 5 days for hematoxylin and eosin stain, elastase, and Ki staining. Consumption of fruits and vegetables has been shown to be effective in the prevention of chronic diseases.

These benefits are often attributed to the high antioxidant content of some plant foods. Apples are commonly eaten and are large contributors of phenolic compounds in European and North American diets. The peels of apples , in particular, are high in phenolics. During applesauce and canned apple manufacture, the antioxidant-rich peels of apples are discarded.

To determine if a useful source of antioxidants is being wasted, the phytochemical content, antioxidant activity, and antiproliferative activity of the peels of four varieties of apples Rome Beauty, Idared, Cortland, and Golden Delicious commonly used in applesauce production in New York state were investigated. Idared and Rome Beauty apple peels had the highest total phenolic contents Rome Beauty and Idared peels were also highest in flavonoids Of the four varieties, Idared apple peels had the most anthocyanins, with Idared peels had the greatest antioxidant activity Apple peels were also shown to more effectively inhibit the growth of HepG 2 human liver cancer cells than the other apple components.

Objective: To observe effects of exogenous high mobility group protein box 1 HMGB1 on angiogenesis in ischemic zone of early scald wounds of rats. Immediately after scald , rats in HMGB1 group were subcutaneously injected with 0. At post scald hour PSH 24, 48, and 72, 6 rats in each group were collected. Protein expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor VEGF in ischemic zone of wound at PSH 24, 48, and 72 and protein expressions of CD31 in ischemic zone of wound at PSH 48 and 72 were detected by immunohistochemistry.

The number of microvessel in CD31 immunohistochemical sections of ischemic zone of wound at PSH 48 and 72 was calculated after observing by the microscope. Data were processed with analysis of variance of factorial design, t test, and Bonferroni correction. The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of scalds induced by "guo lian kang" literally "stove connected to bed" in children.

The demographic, burn features, outcome, and other information of year-old children with "guo lian kang"-induced scalds admitted to the burn treatment center of the Hospital of the People's Liberation Army in Datong from 30 September to 31 December were analyzed. Among the children clearly documented with scalds due to hot liquid in vessels, Most scalds occurred on the upper limbs, The burn agent was mainly hot water in pots. Scalding mostly occurred when the children accidentally sat on, or fell or stepped into the pot while playing.

Among the children with "guo lian kang"-induced scalds , up to In addition, There were no significant differences between children with scalds caused by "guo lian kang" and scalds caused due to other reasons considering the age and sex. Compared to scalds due to other reasons, children with "guo lian kang"-induced scalds had greater burn area and depth, shock incidence, surgery rate, blood transfusion rate, length of hospital stay, and.

Short-term biomarkers of apple consumption. Urinary biomarkers are used to estimate the nutritional intake of humans. Apples were chosen as they are the most consumed fruits in Germany. Thirty subjects took part in 7-day study. They abstained from apples and apple products except for one weighed apple portion resembling one, two, or four apples. Before apple consumption and during the following days spot urine samples were collected. Phloretin was confirmed as a urinary biomarker of apple intake and had the ability to discriminate between low or medium one or two apples and high apple consumption four apples.

The groups also differ in the excretion of epicatechin and procyanidin B2. Apple consumption can be monitored by urinary biomarkers for a period of at least 12 h after consumption. Furthermore the amount of apples consumed can be estimated by the concentration of certain biomarkers. KGaA, Weinheim.

Root Learning, a learning consulting organization with a background in strategic planning, recognizes the knowledge gap that frequently exists between a leadership team and the rest of an organization. Team members supposedly working toward the same goal don't always have the same vision as to where the organization is headed, and they may not understand how the piece they are accountable for fits into the big picture.

To address these complex problems, Root Learning utilizes the age-old tools of sarcasm, metaphor and graphics much in the same way that ASK uses a traditional storytelling format. The company is best known for creating "Learning Maps" like this one: humorous drawings based on the inner workings of an organization. Their purpose is to put complex topics on the table, to stimulate discussion, and to ultimately give team members a common vision of where the organization is going and what role they personally play in getting there.

APPL knows how effective it is to incorporate new and engaging techniques into its knowledge sharing programs. By collaborating with Root Learning, we were able to expand the knowledge of the organization and add one more of these techniques to our repertoire. Apple Malus x domestica. Apple Malus x domestica is one of the most consumed fruit crops in the world.

The major production areas are the temperate regions, however, because of its excellent storage capacity it is transported to distant markets covering the four corners of the earth. Transformation is a key to sustaining this demand - permitting the potential enhancement of existing cultivars as well as to investigate the development of new cultivars resistant to pest, disease, and storage problems that occur in the major production areas.

In this paper we describe an efficient Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation protocol that utilizes leaf tissues from in vitro grown plants. Shoot regeneration is selected with kanamycin using the selectable kanamycin phosphotransferase APH 3 II gene and the resulting transformants confirmed using the scorable uidA gene encoding the bacterial beta-glucuronidase GUS enzyme via histochemical staining. Transformed shoots are propagated, rooted to create transgenic plants that are then introduced into soil, acclimatized and transferred to the greenhouse from where they are taken out into the orchard for field-testing.

Development of apple chips technology. For develop of apple chips technology without chemical preservation osmotic dehydration in cherry or apple juice concentrates or fructooligosaccharide solutions and convection drying were used. Studies included the effect of dehydration on the mass transfer in apples and the quality of the final product. The temperature, type of osmotic solution and its concentration were changeable.

The fruit were tested on mass transfer indicators, stability water activity , texture breaking test and nutritional value polyphenol content, acidity. Sensory evaluation was also performed.

A maximum of 1, tickets will be sold.

I grew up in an era when mothers thought nothing of buying six packs of candy bars for dessert, the same way they thought nothing of serving syrupy pineapple slices straight from a Del Monte can. Hence my first true love: Black Cow suckers, which, tragically, are nearly impossible to find these days. I like Common Candy. Caramel Creams. Tootsie Rolls. Tootsie Roll Pops. Sugar Daddies. BB Bats. I like the cheap stuff, the fake stuff. Again, blame the previous generation.

One friend has a candy drawer in her kitchen especially for her grandchildren. Now, that falls in the Great Grandparent category, beating Tweetsie Railroad or some old butterfly garden like a drum. Plus, I know where the drawer is. Like Mikey in the old Life cereal advertisements, my husband will eat anything even slightly candy-like, including peppermints. The only people who consider peppermints candy and not breath mints are children with candy canes at Christmas.

I had a boarding school friend who ate Mentos like popcorn. I can still see her putting her thumb in the roll and wedging one out. Mentos are not candy. They were precursors to Tic Tacs. Peppermints are desperation candy in the same way that my sister thinks meatloaf is Depression food. Then again, I absolutely love meatloaf, which means that I keep a bowl of peppermints available for my husband.

Each to his own tastes. Has anyone ever even eaten a Zero bar but me? You peel. Plus, milk chocolate. Higher up on my candy food chain: Snickers. Milky Way. Beneath discussion: marshmallow peanuts and Peeps. Easter candy is a bust in general. Junior Mints. Too much peanut butter, peanuts, and, again, peppermint.

Where else but the place where I get my tires rotated could I find a vending machine that cranks out a handful of Hot Tamales for a quarter? Not a fan of Pixie Stix — why not just buy a packet of Kool-Aid, sprinkle some powder in your palm, and lick it off?

Seeing a pattern here? Clearly, I favor candy with taffy, teeth-pulling textures. Caramels, nougats, taffy itself, fudgy chocolate like a Tootsie Roll, Laffy Taffy. Milk Duds. Starburst in a pinch. For one birthday, a friend gave me a pack of Sugar Daddys — vastly preferable to Sugar Babies — which I take to the movies. That literal sucker lasts the whole movie, especially if you eat the paper stick too, as I do.

Nothing better than a spit-and-sugar soaked stick. But Jolly Ranchers? Hard candy is for colonoscopy prep. Just keep your Toblerone and Godiva. Riesens are as upscale as I get. Nor have I ever understood Necco wafers, Pez, or Valentine hearts. Why not just eat chalk? Same thing for those elastic band necklaces strung with pastel candy discs that you eat while wearing it, though I admire the concept.

You know that friend with the candy drawer? My attitude concerns the costumes, not the candy. Almost as much as I love Cow Tales. PS Susan S. Kelly is a blithe spirit, author of several novels, and a proud grandmother. I sat on the couch, grading papers on my computer, trying to ignore it all.

You can put your lunch in a Walmart bag. That night we looked around for the missing lunchbox, but it was nowhere to be found. When I picked him up from wrestling practice, the first thing I asked was if he found his lunchbox.

Still missing in action. Another Walmart bag it was. The next day after school it was time to do a grid search of all known or suspected lunchbox locations. Everywhere we could think of — under the car seats, in his room, in the living room, in the bathroom, under the bed — it could be anywhere. Finally, I decided I was tired of looking for it. Before I left, I asked David to unload the dishwasher.

He wanted to wait until the last second, of course, hoping to coincide placing the last dish in the cupboard with the sound of me turning the doorknob. It was followed by a picture. The picture showed the pots and pans piled on top of each other in the cupboard — a strainer tossed on top — and near the back, between the lids, there was a splash of blue.

The missing lunchbox. Had I put his lunchbox in the cupboard without thinking? Hell, I found cereal in the refrigerator the other day that I put away with the milk. Putting aside commercial elements and recent traditions, Thanksgiving is about addressing hunger. Fifty percent of the Plymouth colonists died during the first year, many from illnesses exacerbated by a poor diet, since not enough food was grown and put by for the harsh Massachusetts winter.

Perhaps the only thing worse than starving is starving sick, in the cold. Americans hear a lot about starvation. I have heard a day hunger strike survivor describe the symptoms: headache, cramps, delusions. Men, women and children suffer these symptoms every day, not just in the hurricane-ravaged Bahamas or famine-ridden African nations.

They exist in the Appalachians and inner-city ghettos. Just the opposite. Yet prices keep rising, in part because Americans are spoiled rotten. Not enough white meat on your bosomy Butterball? She may be reached at debsalomon nc. It is both smart and sneaky. Historically, crows were considered a bad omen: a common familiar of witches. Our common, year-round crow is the American crow. However, for a good part of the year we also have fish crows in the area. They, too, breed here but move east and probably south in the fall in large groups.

Interestingly, they are often one of the first migrants to return to the Sandhills by early February. Ravens are a bird of a different feather and deserve a whole column of their own one of these days. Crows are more scavengers than they are predators.

Without hesitation, they will take advantage of defenseless young birds and animals, but are more likely to be found picking at prey left by others or feeding on roadkill. They lack talons and the raptorial grip of hawks and owls. Their bills are very strong, however. Crows can bite, tear and dig through a variety of materials. Vision is the one of the sharpest of their senses.

In wet habitat, they will seek out female turtles laying eggs and lie in wait until the nest is complete. Even though the turtle may carefully rearrange the vegetation or leaf litter to dis-. Not only do they possess tremendous visual acuity, crows have demonstrated the ability to remember familiar patterns, such as the faces of people who feed them, or, conversely, torment them. In feeding experiments, not only were American crows able to remember where food was hidden, but in what order investigators left a series of treats.

They have also been observed using tools: deliberately manipulating sticks with their bills to pry insect prey from cracks and crevices. For large birds, crow nests are well-concealed. In our area, they often use abandoned hawk or squirrel nests. When they do create a nest from scratch, it is most likely a stick-built affair, hidden at the very top of a tall pine. The only hint of its location tends to be parents chasing away intruders. Watch for a soaring hawk that is being harassed or a squirrel being pursued as it makes its way from tree to tree.

American crows often gather in loose aggregations to breed. Two or three nests may be close to one another. That results in not only better protection but more eyes on the lookout for food resources. Also, adolescents — young from the previous year — may act as helpers during their first spring. It comes as no surprise that crows tend to be rather successful breeders. With our gardens, henhouses, bird feeders and compost piles, humans are a major source of food for crows.

Given their patience and perseverance, they have figured out how to take advantage of us. Maybe the time has come for us to step back and appreciate them for the amazing creatures that they are. PS Susan would love to hear from you. Send wildlife sightings and photos to susan ncaves. It was late fall, not quite winter. I was holding forth on my own, as the other members had Thanksgiving holiday travels to complete. Thanksgiving at our house was over pretty fast.

We were sitting by the fire talking about holidays and how they change as we grow older. This is one of the quickest Thanksgivings ever. None of the other guys will be there, but maybe I can get in a solitary hunt. I hate for you to be in the middle of nowhere by yourself. What if you have an accident, get bitten by a snake or something? You would be in real trouble. North Carolina duck hunting season is split, with the early season coming in October for three days, then in November a period of a little over two weeks, which we call the Thanksgiving season, and then the final period in the cold months, beginning in December and ending in late January.

Usually, the duck club does most of our hunting in the late season, but we try to get together as many times as we can. This was my first visit to the little cabin that has served as home during duck season since late summer, when we all met to work on the impoundments and also to build duck blinds. We have three impoundments on the property bordering the Pamlico Sound. They are about 5 acres each, planted in corn during the summer and flooded with fresh water when duck season arrives.

The impoundments are a food source and resting area for ducks of all species as they migrate south. In the early years of waterfowling at Mattamuskeet, just a few impoundments attracted loads of ducks. Now there are so many that waterfowl are dispersed all over the area. Great for ducks, but bad for hunters. I noticed several flights of teal ducks as I crossed the Pungo River. Teal are small fast fliers that migrate early and also the species that I think is the best table fare.

If they are on the Pungo this early, they should be on the Pamlico. A good sign, I thought. Everything was quiet when I pulled in the parking area of our little cabin. I unloaded the vehicle, put together a quick lunch that I could take with me to the blind, strapped on my pistol in case I had to shoot a snake, and hiked out to our closest impoundment.

Earlier we had built a permanent blind next to the dike right over the water. I ate my lunch of sardines, crackers and a big slab of sharp cheddar cheese and topped it off with a frosty bottle of Blue Moon beer. There is absolutely no drinking while hunting at our club, but this afternoon I was going to just watch, no shooting, and acclimate myself to the wilds once again.

After the long morning ride through so-called civilization, which included the madhouse on Interstate 40, the cold beer hit the spot. Daylight saving time was over and night comes a lot faster, so I packed my gear and watched the sun slowly sink into the marsh horizon.

It was another beautiful sunset that can only be seen on the banks of the Pamlico. As I was slowly walking up the dike, I heard in the distance a couple of coyotes barking, and an owl hooted over in the tree line as he began his nightly hunt. Southern Pines, NC. Right at the end of the dike and just before the road widens on the way to the cabin, I paused and looked back toward the Pamlico.

I could see silhouettes of ducks as they swarmed over the corn. They were diving into the impoundment as if they were using it as a roost. I watched until it became too dark and hiked on back to prepare supper. I chuckled to myself as I walked up the little path that served as a road. Ducks seem to have a builtin clock.

In the morning, a duck hunter can legally shoot one half hour before sunrise and, in the evening, must stop hunting at sunset. These laws are strict and enforced by game wardens down to the minute. The ducks that use our impoundments seem to be aware of the time, too, usually arriving too late and leaving too early. Supper was easy. Linda had put together leftovers from Thanksgiving for me to bring, so there was no cooking. Just warm up a delicious dinner. Wonder why turkey and dressing always taste better the second time around?

John had built a little kitchen island for the lodge to supplement counter space, and it usually worked out that after supper we all stood around the maple square enjoying an after-dinner drink while listening to our favorite music from a portable CD player.

I washed my dinner dishes, and then to keep up the tradition, I poured a couple of fingers of Scotch, cranked up the CD player, and enjoyed Patsy as she sang the almost mystical songs of her short career. Before I retired after a long day, I turned off the outdoor lights and went out on the little porch, where we keep an outdoor grill.

A quarter moon was high in the sky, and a soft mist, almost a fog, was lowering in the trees. I could hear the coyotes barking as they still looked for dinner; and in the far distance, the owl hooted as if it was tired of looking. As I turned to go inside, I heard the unmistakable whistle of widgeon ducks flying high, hopefully right to our impoundments.

Pinehurst No. I learned about five things about design this week — on a course 50 years old. Course maintenance staff had to keep the greens, converted from Bermuda to bent in the summer of , well-hydrated in the Southern heat and humidity; their softness allowed golfers to aim at flagsticks with abandon.

Pinehurst officials did exactly that, but when Colgate departed as the headline sponsor following the tournament, financial problems suffocated the event. The Hall of Fame Classic lasted three more years but was gripped in a downward spiral of momentum. Without the best players, the gate dwindled. And the purse got smaller.

Diamondhead itself was in major arrears with its creditors as the early s evolved; the company had lost Pinehurst, and the resort was in the hands of a consortium of banks when the last Hall of Fame Classic was held in September, It was during the s as well that Pinehurst officials first reached out to the USGA with the idea of hosting the U.

An unusual cause of death at preschool age: scalding by hot milk. Scalding is one of the most painful and devastating burn injuries a child can suffer. Victims are generally scalded by splashed or spilled hot fluids in the home environment.

Interestingly, scalding by hot milk is a common cause of burns in rural parts of Turkey. This study aimed to identify the general features of scalding by hot milk, and to make the authorities aware of this problem through educational programs for parents and caregivers. Forty-four deaths in children of preschool age under 6 due to scalding by hot milk during were analyzed. Scalding with hot milk constituted 1.

Twenty-five The victims' ages ranged between 18 months and 6 years, with a mean age of 3. Scalding by hot milk appears to be an important public health problem, especially in rural areas of Turkey. Educational programs for families and caregivers and implementation of simple safety measures will decrease the prevalence of deaths due to such preventable injuries.

Steam versus hot-water scalding in reducing bacterial loads on the skin of commercially processed poultry. A comparison of two types of scalders was conducted to determine their effectiveness in reducing bacterial contamination of poultry carcasses.

A conventional hot-water scalder and a prototype model of a steam scalder were tested under commercial conditions. Total plate counts from steam- scalded birds were significantly lower than the counts of water- scalded birds immediately after scalding and again after picking. No differences in the two methods could be found after chilling. Coliform counts from steam- scalded birds were significantly lower than the counts from water- scalded birds immediately after scalding.

No significant differences in coliform counts were detected when the two scald methods were compared after defeathering and chilling. Effects of broiler carcass scalding and chilling methods on quality of early-deboned breast fillets. The impact of scalding and chilling methods on quality of broiler breast fillets pectoralis major was evaluated.

Following evisceration, the carcasses were either air-chilled 0. Breast fillets were removed from the carcass within 4 h postmortem. Quality attributes including fillet color both dorsal-bone and ventral-skin sides , pH, total moisture content, water-holding capacity drip loss and cook loss , and Warner-Bratzler shear force were determined. Immersion chilling resulted in higher P 0. These results indicate that broiler carcass chilling method has a much greater impact on quality of breast meat than scalding method and that the influence of chilling on breast meat quality is independent of scalding treatment.

Cancer chemopreventive potential of apples , apple juice, and apple components. Main structural classes of apple constituents include hydroxycinnamic acids, dihydrochalcones, flavonols quercetin glycosides , catechins and oligomeric procyanidins, as well as triterpenoids in apple peel and anthocyanins in red apples. Several lines of evidence suggest that apples and apple products possess a wide range of biological activities which may contribute to health beneficial effects against cardiovascular disease, asthma and pulmonary dysfunction, diabetes, obesity, and cancer reviewed by Boyer and Liu, Nutr J The present review will summarize the current knowledge on potential cancer preventive effects of apples , apple juice and apple extracts jointly designated as apple products.

In brief, apple extracts and components, especially oligomeric procyanidins, have been shown to influence multiple mechanisms relevant for cancer prevention in IN VITRO studies. These include antimutagenic activity, modulation of carcinogen metabolism, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory mechanisms, modulation of signal transduction pathways, antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing activity, as well as novel mechanisms on epigenetic events and innate immunity.

Apple products have been shown to prevent skin, mammary and colon carcinogenesis in animal models. Epidemiological observations indicate that regular consumption of one or more apples a day may reduce the risk for lung and colon cancer.

Superficial bursitis most often occurs in the olecranon and prepatellar bursae. Less common locations are the superficial infrapatellar and subcutaneous superficial calcaneal bursae.

Chronic microtrauma e. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical presentation, with a particular focus on signs of septic bursitis. Ultrasonography can help distinguish bursitis from cellulitis. Blood testing white blood cell count, inflammatory markers and magnetic resonance imaging can help distinguish infectious from noninfectious causes.

If infection is suspected, bursal aspiration should be performed and fluid examined using Gram stain, crystal analysis, glucose measurement, blood cell count, and culture. Management depends on the type of bursitis. Chronic microtraumatic bursitis should be treated conservatively, and the underlying cause addressed.

Bursal aspiration of microtraumatic bursitis is generally not recommended because of the risk of iatrogenic septic bursitis. Although intrabursal corticosteroid injections are sometimes used to treat microtraumatic bursitis, high-quality evidence demonstrating any benefit is unavailable. Chronic inflammatory bursitis e. For septic bursitis, antibiotics effective against Staphylococcus aureus are generally the initial treatment, with surgery reserved for bursitis not responsive to antibiotics or for recurrent cases.

Outpatient antibiotics may be considered in those who are not acutely ill; patients who are acutely ill. Dermatophytes are significant pathogens in animal health due to their zoonotic potential, the economic consequences of infection in farm animal and fur production systems, and the distressing lesions they cause in small domestic pets.

Malassezia spp are normal commensal and occasional pathogens of the skin of many veterinary species. Malassezia pachydermatis is a very common cause of otitis and pruritic dermatitis in dogs but is of less importance in other veterinary species.

Dermatophytosis, and Malassezia otitis and dermatitis, represent the superficial mycoses of greatest significance in companion and farm animal health. Although the dermatophytes and Malassezia spp both exist in the stratum corneum of mammalian skin, there are important differences in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical consequences of infection. Dermatophytes are significant due to their zoonotic potential, the economic consequences of infection in farm animal and fur production systems, and the concern for owners of pets with inflammatory skin disease that is sometimes severe.

Observing the effect of nano-silver hydrogel coating film on deep partial thickness scald model of rabbit. We prepared boiling water scalded rabbits with deep II degree scald models and applied high, medium and low doses of nano-silver hydrogel coating film for different time and area. Then we compared the difference of burned paper weight before administration and after administration model burns, burn local skin irritation points infection, skin crusting and scabs from the time, and the impact of local skin tissue morphology.
